On the public server...
You can wear what you enjoy most, although many of us like the British infantry uniform and green berets unless there are some public players on who don't have the mod, in which case it's back to the NATO stock uniform. Weapon choice is completely free, so use what you enjoy most. Sometimes the section leader will request you change weapons if a particular role is required eg 10 players with sniper rifles may be a bit silly!
While on Operations or Training...
... things are different. It will depend on the mission itself and generally the mission maker will provide your character with gear appropriate to the role that you have signed up to. All you need to do is make sure you have downloaded and installed the 3CB pre-requisite mods and any additional required for that mission. In future I expect we'll be using L85/Sa80 rifle mods quite a bit, so you could get some practise in with the @Sa80Ris weapons.
