There is a star already named lemmy so it meets their requirements

iupac don't name stars as far as i'm aware. and you have to be a scientist to get an element named after you i thought?

The petition page details the rules for naming elements, stars places mythological concepts and scientists are allowed to be used to name elements

By stars I'd imagine they mean "historically named stars", rather than "xXxDaVeSgOtAbIgCoCkxXx" as purchased on nameastar.com

Even the legitimately named more recent stars are extremely unlikely to be chosen, imo.

I think you're overcomplicating this really. The concept is to name a heavy metal element after a heavy metal musician. The name lemmy is eligible as there is already a star with that name, so it satisfies the iupacs rules for naming elements.

Heavy metal puns aside it sounds like quite a fitting tribute for one of the most influential rock musicians of the last 50 years.

Yes, I understand the fitting nature of the proposal - I'm just saying that the mechanism you're proposing for it being accepted (it being a star name) is pants
