Armaholic

Armaholic has recently changed and I personally think that it did not change for the better. They basically want money now to use the full functionality of the site.

Quote:
As a guest you are viewing our public newsstream displaying a limited number of releases and updates. In the past 7 days our subscribers have been informed about 60 additional new and updated releases! To be able to view the 60 updates or releases you have missed become a subscriber!

Subscription is either 7€ per month or 75€ per year.

Quote:
To improve the service we provide to the Arma community we have decided to start the Armaholic Subscription system. The Armaholic Subscription system offers those who choose to subscribe to our website some additional features which are not available to or website guests and normal members.

  • Download speeds:
    • Guests:
      • The slowest downloadspeed
    • Members:
      • Higher downloadspeeds than guests
    • Subscriber:
      • The highest downloadspeeds
  • News stream:
    • Guests and Members:
      • A limited newsstream. You will continue to find new and updated releases but many new releases and updates will be hidden.
    • Subscriber:
      • The full newsstream, including Dteam Workshop releases and updates.
  • Find content by date:
    • Guests and Members:
      • Not able to search through our file lists by date.
    • Subscriber:
      • Can search through our file lists by date to find all new and updated releases easily.

I can understand that hosting the site and all the content does cost money. I personally have no big issues with limiting the download speed, but blocking basic functions like a proper news stream and sorting search results by date should be free.

I imagine he's probably losing revenue from people switching to STEAM Workshop.

I agree it's too expensive - €5 would be more likely for people to sign up. I'd rather sell a lot for less than none for lots....

Can't say I'm a fan of it but I get the guy is trynna make ends meet.

Thing is tho I haven't used Armaholic in a long time, I find news on the latest mods from here - https://forums.bistudio.com/forums/forum/156-arma-3-addons-mods-complete/ and a few others forums within the site.
As for download speeds the mod creators will probably upload their work to their own hosting sites (i.e. Mega, Dropbox, Mediafire etc) to save slow downloads from Armaholic. Most already do.

All in all as much as this sucks I don't think it's the end of the world!

That seems like a lot for content that is not even his. If it was just run not-for-profit i could understand but given we can't know if that's the case, its like selling someone else's IP

There was a thread on r/arma about this whole Armaholic thing, it looks as tho Foxhound (the guy who runs Armaholic) has nailed his own coffin!

From what people are saying it looks as tho Foxhound is a major thunder C U Next Thursday! Combine it with his recent paywall decision and it looks to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Whilst I appreciate this might or might not be your opinion, I don't really think its appropriate to peddle/speculate/quote etc opinions like this on our forums, Especially not in a public forum.
