Well it certainly won't go up bud :P.

If you can white knuckle it until release, it couldn't hurt to see.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking. Going to wait and see, haha. Worse case scenario, no change and I buy the card in a few weeks!
I think I will wait until pascal and then see what price the 980ti drops to.  If it doesn't go near £400 I'll go for a fury x

Meanwhile I'm still sitting here with my GTX 680.

That one lad from Essex.

Haha, I'm not too far ahead right now, got a 770 at the moment.

You won't get a solid 60 on arma by clocking your chip to 4ghz.

My 4690k is at 4.4ghz and I struggle to get 60 most of the time. Getting more than 4 cores won't help either because Arma doesn't utilise them well, if at all.

I'm not sure it really would be, in real terms. My research around when I was buying my 970 showed that the 980 was only a modest step up from the 970 in terms of performance, but cost 50% more (£300 vs £450 at the time). Better to save that £150 now, and get your next card at essentially the same time probably - if you're upgrading in the future because of a new game, the 970 is likely to be just as outdated as the 980 for whatever new shinything you want to play.

It depends on what you mean by future proofing.  The 970 and 980 have the same chipset, so although the later is faster, both are identical in terms of features.  Thus both become last gen when the next versions are released.  That being said DX12 runs on cards that are 4-5 years old.  NVIDIA, AMD, Microsoft and game studios cannot afford to limit their customer base to just those who have the latest cards.

Whilst in most cases 2x970 out perf a single 980, this requires SLI to be implemented correctly.  Not all games support it well. For example A3 currently has an issue with  PIP and SLI.

There is no best solution.  It depends on what games you play and the perf of the rest of your PC.  One thing that is critical is that the GPU and CPU must be of similar perfomance, otherwise you'll be CPU bound.  Putting it another way, you'll be throwing away your money.

lifetap thanks for the insight.

Would an i5-2500 at 3.3GHz and a GTX970 be of 'similar performance' in your opinion?
I'm not expecting higher fps, but a prettier picture in Arma and generally improved performance in the few other games I play. Currently running an HD5850 1GB.

The budget won't stretch to a new i7+mobo or GTX980, so it's either a GTX970 or nothing for now, saving the money to upgrade in 12 months+.

Your i5 will be fine mate, 970 will help with the fluffy stuff

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

His men would follow him anywhere, but only out of curiosity.
