Very ingenious, but it appears to miss almost all of the tanks ....

And the payload mass-fraction of that system is atrociously low! And I couldn't work out what height the skeets are at when they detonate, but given that explosively-formed penetrators have relatively limited ranges and can't form under rotating conditions I genuinely can't figure out how the hell they actually get the kill :/

That was about my best guess too, but to the best of my knowledge and reading the EFP becomes ineffective within a few metres - hence most HEAT rounds having on the order of a few inches between the trigger and the warhead proper.

It's been around since the late 1980's under the name SADARM

I knew of the SADARM, but I had no idea of the EFP range! 152m, if wiki is to believed - either there's a fundamental evolution between my understanding and practice, or I've managed to simply misunderstand something 0.o

EFP with canted fins is the answer you are all looking for.

I'll let the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center explain things.

Wow thanks Blue, that's an eye-opening read. I was under the impression that the EFP was essentially molten, and the issue was that it dispersed over distance. From the document and concept of fins it's clearly a solid object until it strikes the target!

I have more. How the canted fins are formed.

tl;dr Syncronised seperate explosives

It's actually because of you I went looking, you said in an earlier post that EFPs couldn't form while in rotation and while not knowing anything about about EFPs it didn't sound right to my engineering brain.

It seems very odd that the Mi-8 would return within seconds of the Hind being hit. Seems unnecessarily risky

Five hours ago, Al-Masdar News broke a story regarding ISIS militants downing a Russian helicopter at Huwaysis, northwest of Palmyra city.

Now, the Russian Ministry of Defence has adressed the story, stating that the Russian aircraft was temporarily downed due to technical failure and subsequently struck by an Islamic State ATGM crew, leaving the helicopter destroyed.

A representative of the Russian MoD stressed: "The crew was not injured and was promptly returned by a search-and-rescue helicopter to the Hmeymim airbase".
