Pin pointing on map and reporting it

Hi All,
just been practising marking vehicles on the map using the following tools:
1) Vector 21
2) MicroDAGR
3) Map

I open up the MicroDAGR and use the connect to function. Then use the Tab & R key on my Vector 21. Then write down the co-ords. Again using the MicroDAGR, add a mark with those co-ords. Switch to map view in the MicroDAGR, find the pin and hold Shift and mark. Close MicroDAGR and open Map, find mark and double click enter text "Enemy Vehicle".

From spotting a vehicle to marking it on the map, i have timed myself at 1 minute. Is this exceptable? It seems long to me, but i think that an acurate marking is best rather than an estimate. If reporting anything to Troop, would 1 minute be acceptable? I would start by saying " 1-0 this is 1-1.....{come back}...Vehicle spotted on our location at WAIT.......{1 minute later}....Map marker Enemy Vehicle (or whatever), message end!"

Is there a quicker way?

Your GPS has coords on the top of it.

Use these along with a rough bearing and ACE map tools.

In practice, the majority of the time you can get away with just using a nearby terrain features.  In all likelihood the vehicle will be moving so accurate positioning is not important.

Yeah, if you've got a little time, using the ACE Map Tool is always a good way to go, if you're really under pressure, terrain features or even just counting grid squares, can give you a rough indication.

Eyeball and compass will get me a ~50m radius accuracy marker on anything within 5 seconds, excluding seriously uncooperative terrain.

If it's enough for people to know roughly where to look, it's sufficient - better rough but current than precise for where it used to be :)

The compass bearings for two marines facing North and stood 200m apart and looking at the same sighting 100m from their base of fire line could be NW and NE. I think, long time since I did trig?

What is the SOP for this?

Snoman

Thanks for the link.  I have been aware I am crap at pinpointing stuff and had no idea of how to use the equipment properly.  My bad for not researching and being lazy.  Thanks most useful and informative.  Now to pracice so I dont call sh*t on top of my section!!!

Methinks you did a lot of work to put that together.

Cheers

Ney, your method would be perfect for directing a precision strike. But probably impractical for most contact sightings. good method to share though. J
